Ipswich & District Ramblers

About us

Who are we?

Ipswich & District Ramblers is a local walking group formed in 1978. We are part of The Ramblers a registered charity (number 1093577) and a company limited by guarantee in England and Wales (number 4458492). We are a large and welcoming group, of mixed ages and backgrounds. We all enjoy walking in this beautiful area which is blessed with a wide variety of countryside, estuaries, heathland, forests and of course our Heritage Coast.

The Ramblers protects Rights of Way, campaigns for access to open countryside and defends the beauty of the countryside.

Join Us

Why not join us for a walk and enjoy exploring the local area? Our walks are open to members and non-members. You can find all our upcoming walks listed in our walks programme. For more on walking with us, see Walk with us and FAQs.

Behind the Scenes

We work to protect and maintain local footpaths and we have an active footpath committee.

When do we walk?

Our walks tend to be mainly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday and weekends. The Group publishes two programmes a year, with half-day walks of 5 to 7 miles and all day outings of 8 to 15 miles with a picnic lunch and/or pub stop. During the summer there are also evening walks of about 4 to 5 miles. Occasionally, there are social events and long weekend walks in other areas. You can find all our upcoming walks listed in our walks programme.

Our walks are open to all members and non-members who are always welcome to join us for a few tasters before deciding to join the Ramblers.

Local Authorities consult the Group on footpath matters and it regularly represents the walking fraternity at Public Enquiries and also on other bodies. We also work to protect and maintain local footpaths and we have an active footpath committee.
